Words to live by…or maybe not!

I was reminded of my 3rd grade teacher the other day while reading a Time article about 15 words we should all be cutting from our vocabulary.

I’ve read articles like it before, reminding us to lay off such crutch words such as “actually,” “literally,” and the sort. It’s information that’s good to keep in mind -after all, we’re all guilty of using certain words too often. Continue reading “Words to live by…or maybe not!”

Detroit’s decline captured on Street View

A fascinating blog called GooBing Detroit is using Google’s Street View and similar services to track the city’s decline.  It shows the evolution of properties over a span of a several years.  In three to four years, many of the homes go from needing repair to being completely dilapidated. Rochester: A Tale of Two Cities

My jaw dropped a bit earlier this week when I read an article in the Democrat and Chronicle titled “Cuomo: Rochester hasn’t looked this good in decades.”  The governor made the comment during a meeting with the newspaper’s editorial board.  He was in town to announce 500 high-tech jobs coming to the area thanks to a new SUNY nanotechnology initiative. The summer of the “supermoon”

There’s something really neat about looking up in the sky and seeing vast, empty space that is illuminated by the moon and stars light years away.  It makes you think about how small our planet really is in the grand scheme of the things.  Personally, it also makes me think about the small joys in my own life: nighttime fires while camping as a kid, or summer walks at night – here, or in the woods of my family’s summer home in New Hampshire. Exploring the world of Gatsby

A few weekends ago I finally took the plastic wrapping off my blu-ray copy of “The Great Gatsby” and popped it in.  It was one of several Christmas presents that I had yet to enjoy, along with the blu-ray player itself.  I had been meaning to watch this film for some time.  In fact, I wanted to see it in the theater but never got around to it.  I wish I hadn’t waited to see it.  Director Baz Luhrmann did an incredible job of bringing the story to life.  I say bringing the story to life, and not the book to life, because I wouldn’t be able to comment on that (I never read it – but it’s now on my summer reading list).
